Read the function, not just its symbols
A function assigns one output to each allowed input. A nonlinear function does not maintain a single constant additive rate across its domain. Quadratic functions curve, exponential functions multiply by a constant factor over equal input steps, and other polynomial, rational, or radical functions can have different shapes and restrictions.
Questions may ask for an output such as , the input where an output is zero, a minimum or maximum, or the meaning of a parameter in context. Others ask which equation fits given values or which transformed function matches a graph. Identify whether the requested answer is an input, an output, a rate, or an entire rule.
Function notation tells you what to substitute. If , then . But means substitute the whole expression wherever the input appears: . It does not mean add one to the output.
A contextual function has units and a useful interval. A height model may be meaningful only from launch until landing. A population model may use years since a stated date. The algebraic intercept corresponds to input zero, which is the starting reference time rather than necessarily the present day.
Choose the form that reveals the answer
| Form | Property it reveals | Important condition |
|---|---|---|
| Vertical intercept | for a quadratic. | |
| Zeros and | Real factored form exists when the zeros are real. | |
| Vertex | Minimum if ; maximum if . | |
| Initial amount and per-unit factor | For standard growth models, , , . |
In , the square is never negative, so the smallest output is nine, attained at input five. You do not need to expand. In , the zeros are one and nine; the axis of symmetry lies halfway between them at . The form directs the shortest method.
For an exponential model , is the amount at and is the fractional increase per time unit. In decay, with . A factor of 1.08 means 8% growth, while a factor of 0.92 means 8% decay.
The exponent determines the time interval. In , increasing by six multiplies the output by . You cannot call the one-unit factor unless the exponent increases by one each input unit. Read the variable's units and exponent together.
Nonlinear functions: FAQ
How do I find the vertex of a quadratic?
Read it from vertex form, use the midpoint of two real zeros, or calculate negative b divided by twice a in standard form. Evaluate the function there to find the extreme output.
What does the base of an exponential mean?
It is the multiplier when the exponent increases by one. Read the exponent to determine how much real time that increase represents.
How do I convert a growth factor to a percent?
For growth, subtract one from the factor and multiply by 100. For a positive decay factor below one, subtract the factor from one and multiply by 100.
Can Desmos find a maximum or minimum?
It can help locate a graph's vertex or other extreme. Check whether that input lies in the stated domain and use algebra when an exact value is required.
What does f(x minus h) do to a graph?
It shifts the graph right by h when h is positive. Changes inside the input must be interpreted before applying outside output shifts or scales.
