SAT Ratios, Rates, and Units: The Complete Guide

Ratios compare quantities; rates compare quantities with different units. This guide shows you how to preserve a relationship, convert units without guessing, and solve harder problems involving density or changing totals.

Recognize a multiplicative relationship

You may be asked how much material a project needs, how long a process takes, or which expression converts a measurement. Look for language such as for every, per, at this constant rate, or directly proportional. These phrases describe multiplication by a fixed factor. Doubling one quantity doubles the other when the relationship is proportional.

A ratio of silver beads to green beads of 4:94:9 means the counts can be written as 4k4k and 9k9k. It does not mean there are only 13 beads. If the total is 65, then 13k=6513k=65, so k=5k=5 and there are 20 silver beads. The ratio describes relative amounts; the total establishes the scale.

A rate includes a direction. Pages per minute means pages divided by minutes, whereas minutes per page is its reciprocal. Both can be useful, but they answer different questions. Underline the requested unit before choosing an operation. If you need time, a distance divided by a speed should leave hours or seconds, not miles squared per hour.

Let units choose the operation

Start with the given quantity and multiply by conversion factors equal to 1. To turn 2.4 hours into minutes, use 2.4 h×60 min1 h=144 min2.4\text{ h}\times\frac{60\text{ min}}{1\text{ h}}=144\text{ min}. The hour units cancel. The reciprocal conversion would leave hours squared per minute, a warning that the setup is backward.

For a constant rate, first decide whether to find the rate, the amount produced, or the elapsed time. You can use a unit rate or a proportion. A unit rate is often clearer when several later steps use the same relationship. A proportion is efficient when you know one complete pair of quantities and one entry of a second pair.

Suppose 8 identical panels require 14 meters of edging. At the same rate, 20 panels require 14 m8 panels×20 panels=35 m\frac{14\text{ m}}{8\text{ panels}}\times20\text{ panels}=35\text{ m}. Since 20 is two and a half times 8, the answer should also be two and a half times 14. That independent scale check catches a reversed fraction.

Ratios, rates, proportional relationships, and units: FAQ

What is dimensional analysis on the SAT?

It is converting quantities by multiplying labeled fractions so unwanted units cancel. It is especially useful for rates, density, area, and volume.

How do I know whether to multiply or divide?

Write the units first. Choose the fraction orientation that cancels the starting unit and leaves the requested unit.

Are all linear relationships proportional?

No. A proportional relationship has a constant ratio and passes through the origin. A linear relationship with a nonzero starting value is not proportional.

Can Desmos solve a proportion?

You can use the calculator to evaluate the resulting expression or solve an equation. First make sure the two ratios compare the same quantities in the same order.
